The importance of YouTube views has been hammered into our heads over the past year after songs such as “Gangnam Style”, “Somebody That I Used To Know”, and just recently, Baauer’s “Harlem Shake” have taken over the charts just days after being uploaded.
Now, YouTube views will play a role in what songs jump up on the charts.

Billboard has announced this week that it’s ‘Hot 100′ chart will now include YouTube plays into the equation of a songs place on the chart. After a week filled with thousands of user uploaded videos of their own rendition of “Harlem Shake”, Baauer became the 21st artist in history to debut number one on the Billboard Hot 100 chart. After all, more than 4,000 “Harlem Shake” videos were being uploaded each day, and soon made it’s way from 18,000 downloads to 103 million YouTube views and 262,000 downloads.

Billboard already incorporated sales, airplay, and Nielsen SoundScan data into a songs place on the chart, but this move takes a step in modernizing the system after just recently adding data from music streaming services such as Spotify to the equation.

Neilsen’s senior analyst, David Bakula, summed it all up in one sentence,

We want to measure how much consumption is going on, in whatever form a consumer chooses to consume something.

Welcome to the new generation of one-hit wonders.
